Book Review: The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if fairy tale characters went to school, then The School for Good and Evil is the book for you! This story has magic, friendship, betrayal, adventure, and some of the biggest plot twists EVER. It’s the first book in a series by Soman Chainani, and it’s totally unputdownable!

What’s the Story About?

Every four years, two kids from a small village are kidnapped and sent to the legendary School for Good and Evil, where they train to become fairy tale heroes or villains.

📖 Sophie and Agatha are complete opposites. Sophie is beautiful, loves pink, dreams of being a princess, and is sure she’ll be placed in the School for Good. Agatha, on the other hand, wears all black, lives in a graveyard, has a black cat, and everyone in town thinks she’s a perfect villain.

But when they get to the school, something unexpected happens—Sophie is placed in the School for Evil, and Agatha is put in the School for Good! 😱 Sophie is horrified because she’s supposed to be a princess, and Agatha just wants to go home. But the more they learn about their school, the more they realize things aren’t as simple as they seem.

With princes, witches, powerful magic, secret prophecies, and a shocking villain reveal, this book is full of surprises and twists that will keep you flipping the pages as fast as possible!

Why This Book is AMAZING

🏰 The Schools are SO Cool!
The School for Good is straight out of a fairy tale—floating castles, unicorns, and classes on etiquette and beauty. Meanwhile, the School for Evil has giant spiders, poisonous swamps, and lessons on curses! The descriptions make you feel like you’re really there.

😈 It’s Not Just Good vs. Evil!
At first, it seems like a classic battle of good vs. evil, but the book quickly shows that things aren’t black and white. Some “good” students are actually mean and selfish, while some “evil” students are kind and loyal. Who decides what makes a person good or evil? That’s one of the biggest questions in the book!

👭 Sophie and Agatha’s Friendship is Everything!
Their relationship is the heart of the book. They start off as best friends, but being thrown into these schools tests their loyalty in ways they never expected. Will they stick together, or will they be forced to become enemies?

💥 The Plot Twists are INSANE!
Just when you think you know what’s going on, BOOM—major twist! I gasped so many times while reading this book. Nothing is predictable, and the story keeps surprising you until the very last page.

Favorite Characters

Agatha – The BEST character! She’s smart, sarcastic, kind, and doesn’t care about fairy tale nonsense. She just wants to go home, but she slowly learns that she might actually belong in the fairy tale world after all.

Sophie – She starts off as a princess wannabe but has one of the most shocking transformations in the book. She’s flawed, complicated, and sometimes scary, but that makes her one of the most interesting characters!

Hort – The funniest character ever! He’s a student in the School for Evil, and he has a crush on Sophie (even though she’s super mean to him). He’s a little weird but totally lovable.

Tedros – The handsome prince of the School for Good, but he’s NOT just a basic fairy tale hero. He has flaws, insecurities, and makes mistakes, which makes him way more interesting.

Tedros Pendragon - The school for good and evil

Lady Lesso & Professor Dovey – The headmistresses of the two schools. They have a fascinating history and prove that good and evil aren’t as different as people think.

Anything I Didn’t Love?

Some parts of the book felt a little long, and sometimes I wanted to shake Sophie for her choices, but honestly, that just made her character more realistic. Also, I wish we got more backstory on some of the side characters, but since it’s a series, I know there’s more to come!

Who Should Read This?

Fans of twisted fairy tales
People who love magic schools (but want something different from Hogwarts!)
Anyone who enjoys books with strong female friendships
Readers who love epic plot twists and mystery!
